Letter that Changed My Life
01/07/09 at 00:57:01

Between alarms I would rush to the company office to read Captain Gray's copy of the Sunday New York Times. It was late in the afternoon when I finally got to the Book Review section(纽约时报的书评版). As I read it, my blood began to boil. An article blatantly stated what I took to be a calumny -- that William Butler Yeats(叶芝,威廉·巴特勒1865-1939爱尔兰作家,被认为是20世纪最伟大的诗人之一), WoW Gold, the Nobel Prize-winning light of the Irish Literary Renaissance, had transcended his Irishness and was forever to be known as a universal poet.

There were few things I was more proud of than my Irish heritage, and ever since I first picked up a book of his poems from a barracks shelf when I was in the military, WoW Gold,Yeats had been my favorite Irish writer, followed by Sean O'Casey and James Joyce.

My ancestors were Irish farmers, fishermen and blue-collar workers, but as far as I can tell, they all had a feeling for literature. It was passed on to my own mother, a telephone operator(话务员), who hardly ever sat down without a book in her hands. And at that moment my own fingernails might have been soiled with the soot of the day's fires, but I felt as prepared as any Trinity don to stand up in the court of public opinion and protest. Not only that Yeats had lived his life and written his poetry through the very essence of his Irish sensibility, wotlk power leveling,**** but that it was offensive to think Irishness -- no matter if it was psychological, social or literary -- was something to be transcended.
The typewriter was so old that I had to use just one finger to type, my strongest one, even though I could type with all ten. I grabbed the first piece of clean paper buy WoW Gold,I could find -- one that had the logo of the Fire Department of the City of New York across the top -- and, hoping there would be a break in the alarms for 20 minutes or so, wrote out a four-paragraph letter of indignation to the editor of the Sunday Book Review(「纽约时报」书评).

Throughout his poetry, I postulated, Yeats yearned for a messiah to lead Ireland out from under the bondage of English rule, and his view of the world and the people Cheap WoW Gold,in it was fundamentally Irish.

Just as I addressed the envelope, the final alarm of my tour came in, and as I slid down the long brass pole, I felt unexpectedly calm, as if a great rock had been purged from the bottom of my stomach.
It was a special and unexpected delight, then, when I learned something I'd written would finally see print. Ironically it wasn't one of my poems or short storiesFFXI Gil, -- it was my letter to the Times. I suppose the editor decided to publish it because he was first attracted by the official nature of my stationery (was his staff taking smoke breaks out on the fire escape?), and then by the incongruity of a ghetto firefighter's using words like messianism, for in the lines below my letter it was announced that I was a New York City firefighter. WoW Gold,I'd like to think, though, that the editor silently agreed with my thesis.
I had little confidence in my ability to write a whole book, though I did intuit that my work as a firefighter was a worthy subject. And so I wrote Report From Engine Co. 82 in six months, and it went on to sell two million copies and to be translated into 12 languages. In the years that followed, I wrote three more best-sellers, and last year published a memoir, A Song for Mary: An Irish-American Memory.
For me, the clearest explanation is that I had found the subject I was searching for, one I felt so strongly about that the writing was a natural consequence of the passion I felt. I was to feel this same kind of passion when I began writing about firefighters and, later, when writing about my mother. These are subjects that, to me, represent the great values of human life -- decency, honesty and fairness -- subjects that burn within me as I write.
My answer is always the same, yet they still ask, for reassurance is a good and helpful thing. Think about what you're feeling deep down in the pit of your stomach, world of warcraft power leveling,I tell them, and measure the heat of the fire there, for that is the passion that will flow through your heart. Your education and your experience will guide you toward making a right decision, but your passion will enable you to make a difference in whatever you do.
That's what I learned the day I stood up for Ireland's greatest poet.4

The Apple Tree

A long time ago, there was a huge apple tree. A little boy loved to come and lay around it every day. He climbed to the tree

top, ate the apples, took a nap under the shadow... He loved the tree and the tree loved to play with him.
WoW Gold
Time went by... the little boy had grown up and he no longer played around the tree every day. One day, the boy came back to

the tree and he looked sad. “Come and play with me,” the tree asked the boy. “I am no longer a kid, I don’t play around

trees anymore.” The boy replied, “I want toys. I need money to buy them.”“Sorry, but I don’t have money...but you can

pick all my apples and sell them. So, you will have money.” The boy was so excited. He grabbed all the apples on the tree

and left happily. The boy never came back after he picked the apples. The tree was sad.
WoW Gold
One day, the boy returned and the tree was so excited. “Come and play with me,” the tree said. “I don’t have time to

play. I have to work for my family. We need a house for shelter. Can you help me?”“Sorry, but I don’t have a house. But

you can chop off my branches to build your house.” So the boy cut all the branches off the tree and left happily. The tree

was glad to see him happy but the boy never came back since then. The tree was again lonely and sad.
wotlk power leveling,****
One hot summer day, the boy returned and the tree was delighted. “Come and play with me!” the tree said. “I am sad and

getting old. I want to go sailing to relax myself. Can you give me a boat?”“Use my trunk to build your boat. You can sail

far away and be happy.” So the boy cut the tree trunk to make a boat. He went sailing and never showed up for a long time.

The tree was happy, but it was not true.
FFXI Gil
Finally, the boy returned after he left for so many years. “Sorry, my boy. But I don’t have anything for you anymore. No

more apples for you...” the tree said.

“I don’t have teeth to bite,” the boy replied.

“No more trunk for you to climb on.”

“I am too old for that now,” the boy said.
world of warcraft power leveling
“I really can’t give you anything... the only thing left is my dying roots,” the tree said with tears.

“I don’t need much now, just a place to rest. I am tired after all these years.” The boy replied.
WoW Gold
“Good! Old tree roots is the best place to lean on and rest. Come, Come sit down with me and rest.” The boy sat down and

the tree was glad and smiled with tears...
Wotlk Gold
This is a story of everyone. The tree is our parent. When we were young, we loved to play with Mom and Dad... When we grown

up, we left them, and only came to them when we need something or when we are in trouble. No matter what, parents will always

be there and give everything they could to make you happy. You may think that the boy is cruel to the tree but that’s how

all of us are treating our parents.

Take time out during the day for quiet time to listen to your inner voice. You may want to use your quiet time to meditate or

pray. However you use this time, the key is to shut out all of the noise around you by focusing deep within yourself.

Breathing deeply during quiet time will also help you focus. I know it’s hard to find quiet time during a particularly busy

day, but it’s so important — even if it’s just 10 minutes a day and you have to sneak away to get it. Quiet time can

really make a difference in your life. It enables you to hear God speaking to your heart reminding you of His perfect love

for you.

Be honest with yourself by paying attention to your actions. Actions speak louder than words, and they always tell the truth.

What do your actions say about you? If you say you love your job, but your actions say otherwise, which do you think is more

true — your words or your actions? On the other hand, if you say you’re not good at a certain job, but your actions say

otherwise, that’s also important. What do you do with this insight? You can use it to make more beneficial choices in your

life. By being honest with yourself based on your previous actions, your actions moving forward will be based on truth

instead of just what you tell yourself.

Despite what your subconscious may be telling you, you can have love with no limits. The key is to unconditionally love

yourself first.

When I was superintendent of schools in Palo Alto, California, Polly Tyner, the president of our board of trustees, wrote a letter that was printed in the Palo Alto Times.
wow gold
Polly's son, Jim, had great difficulty in school. He was classified as educationally handicapped and required a great deal of patience on the part of his parents and teachers. But Jim was a happy kid with a great smile that lit up the room.
wow gold
His parents acknowledged his academic difficulties, but always tried to help him see his strengths so that he could walk with pride. Shortly after Jim finished high school, he was killed in a motorcycle accident. After his death, his mother submitted this letter to the newspaper.
wow power leveling
Today we buried our 20-year-old son. He was killed instantly in a motorcycle accident on Friday night. How I wish I had known when I talked to him last that it would be the last time. If I had only known I would have said, "Jim, I love you and I'm so very proud of you."
wow gold
I would have taken the time to count the many blessings he brought to the lives of the many who loved him. I would have taken time to appreciate his beautiful smile, the sound of his laughter, his genuine love of people.
power leveling
When you put all the good attributes on the scale and you try to balance all the irritating traits such as the radio
wow gold which was always too loud, the haircut that wasn't to our liking, the dirty socks under the bed, etc., the irritations don't amount to much.
wow gold
I won't get another chance to tell my son all I would have wanted him to hear, but, other parents, you do have a chance. Tell your young people what you would want them to hear if you knew it would be your last conversation. The last time I talked to Jim was the day he died. He called me to say, "Hi, Mom! I just called to say I love you. Got to go to work. Bye." He gave me something to treasure forever.
wow gold
If there is any purpose at all to Jim's death, maybe it is to make others appreciate more of life and to have people,
wow goldespecially families, take the time to let each other know just how much we care.

You may never have another chance. Do it today!

Frederic Francois Chopin, Polish-born composer and renowned pianist, was the creator of 55

mazurkas, 13 polonaises, 24 preludes, 27 etudes, 19 nocturnes, 4 ballads, and 4 scherzos
Although Chopin later attended the Lyceum where his father taught, his early training began

at home.  wow gold, This included receiving piano

lessons from his mother. By the age of six, Chopin was creating original pieces, showing

innate prodigious musical ability. His parents arranged for the young Chopin to take piano

instruction from Wojciech Zywny.

When Chopin was sixteen, he attended the Warsaw Conservatory of Music, directed by composer

Joseph Elsner. Elsner, like Zywny, insisted on the traditional training associated with

Classical wow gold,  music but allowed his students to

investigate the more original imaginations of the Romantic style as well.

As often happened with the young musicians of both the Classical and Romantic Periods, Chopin

was sent to Vienna, the unquestioned center of music for that day. He gave piano concerts and

then arranged to have his pieces published by a Viennese publishing house there. While Chopin

was  wow gold, in Austria, Poland and Russia faced off in the

apparent beginnings of war. He returned to Warsaw to get his things in preparation of a more

permanent move. While there, his friends gave him a silver goblet filled with Polish soil. He

kept it always, as he was never able to return to his beloved Poland.

French by heritage, and desirous of finding musical acceptance from a less traditional

audience wow gold,  than that of Vienna, Chopin ventured

to Paris. Interestingly, other young musicians had assembled in the city of fashion with the

very same hope. Chopin joined Franz Liszt, Hector Berlioz, Felix Mendelssohn, Vincenzo

Bellini, and Auguste Franchomme, all proponents of the "new" Romantic style.

Although Chopin did play in the large concert halls on occasion, he felt most at home in

private settings, enjoying the social milieu that accompanied concerts for the wealthy. He

also wow geld,  enjoyed teaching, as

this caused him less stress than performing. Chopin did not feel that his delicate technique

and intricate melodies were as suited to the grandiose hall as they were to smaller

environments and audiences.

News of the war in Poland inspired Chopin to write many sad musical pieces expressing his

grief for "his" Poland. Among these was the famous "Revolutionary Etude." Plagued by poor

health  wow geld, as well as his

homesickness, Chopin found solace in summer visits to the country. Here, his most complex yet

harmonic creations found their way to the brilliant composer's hand. The "Fantasia in F

Minor," the "Barcarolle," the "Polonaise Fantasia," "Ballade in A Flat Major," "Ballade in F

Minor," and "Sonata wow power leveling,  in B

Minor" were all products of the relaxed time Chopin enjoyed in the country.

As the war continued in Warsaw and then reached Paris, Chopin retired to Scotland with

friends. Although he was far beyond the reach of the revolution, his melancholy attitude did

not improve and he sank deeper into a depression. Likewise, his health did not rejuvenate

either.  wow geld, A window in the fighting made

it possible for Chopin to return to Paris as his health deteriorated further. Surrounded by

those that he loved, Frederic Francois Chopin died at the age of 39. He was buried in Paris.

Chopin's last wow geld,  request was that the

Polish soil in the silver goblet be sprinkled over his grave.2

“To be or not to be”. Outside the Bible, there six words are the most famous in all the literature of the world. They were spoken by Hamlet when he was thinking aloud, and they are the most famous words in Shakespeare because Hamlet was speaking not only foe himself but for every thinking man and woman. To be or not to be-to live or not to live, to live richly and abundantly and eagerly, or to live dully and meanly and scarcely. A philosopher once wanted to know whether he was alive or not, which is a good question for everyone to put to himself occasionally. He answered it by saying:“I think, therefore I am.”(wow gold)

But the best definition of existence I ever saw was one written by another philosopher who said:“To be is to be in relations.”If this is true, then the more relations a living thing has, the more relations a living thing has, the more it is alive. To live abundantly means simply to increase the range and intensity of our relations. Unfortunately we are so constituted that we get to love our routine. But apart from our regular occupation how much are we alive? If you are interested only in your regular occupation, you are alive only to that extent. So far as other things are concerned-poetry and prose, music, pictures, sports, unselfish friendships, politics, international affairs-you are dead.(buy wow gold)

Contrariwise, it is true that every time you acquire a new interest-even more, a new accomplishment-you increase your power of life. No one who is deeply interested in a large variety of subjects can remain unhappy, the real pessimist is the person who has lost interest.

Bacon said that a man dies as often as he loss a friend. But we gain new life by contacts, new friends. What is supremely true of living objects is only less true of ideas, which are also alive. Where your thoughts are, there will your life be also. If your thoughts are confined only to your business, only to your physical welfare, only to the narrow circle of the town in which you live,(cheap wow gold), then you live in a narrow circle of the town in which you live, then you live in a narrow circumscribed life. But if you are interested in what is going on in China, then you are living in China; if you are interested in the characters of a good novel, then you are living with those highly interesting people; if you listen intently to fine music, you are away from your immediate surroundings and living in a world of passion and imagination.(world of warcraft gold)

To be or not to be-to live intensely and richly, or merely to exist, that depends on ourselves. Let us widen and intensify our relations. While we live, let us live!

Ivanoushka the Simpleton

In a kingdom far away from our country, there was a town over which ruled the Tsar Pea with his

Tsaritza Carrot. He had many wise statesmen, wealthy princes, strong, powerful warriors, and also

simple soldiers, a hundred thousand, less one man. In that town lived all kinds of people: honest,

bearded merchants, keen and open-handed rascals, German tradesmen, lovely maidens, Russian

drunkards; and in the suburbs all around, the peasants tilled the soil, sowed the wheat, ground the

flour, traded in the markets, and spent the money in drink.

In one of the suburbs there was a poor hut where an old man lived with his three sons, Thomas,

Pakhom, and Ivan. The old man was not only clever, he was wise. He had happened once to have a chat

with the devil. They talked together while the old man treated him to a tumbler of wine and got out

of the devil many great secrets. Soon after this the peasant began to perform such marvelous acts

that the neighbors called him a sorcerer, a magician, and even supposed that the devil was his kin.
world of warcraft power leveling   ,
Yes, it is true that the old man performed great marvels. Were you longing for love, go to him, bow

to the old man, and he would give you some strange root, and the sweetheart would be yours. If

there is a theft, again to him with the tale. The old man conjures over some water, takes an

officer along straight to the thief, and your lost is found; only take care that the officer steals

it not.

Indeed the old man was very wise; but his children were not his equals. Two of them were almost as

clever. They were married and had children, but Ivan, the youngest, was single. No one cared much

for him because he was rather a fool, could not count one, two, three, and only drank, or ate, or

slept, or lay around. Why care for such a person? Every one knows life for some is brighter than

for others. But Ivan was good-hearted and quiet. Ask of him a belt, he will give a kaftan also;

take his mittens, he certainly would want to have you take his cap with them. And that is why all

liked Ivan, and usually called him Ivanoushka the Simpleton; though the name means fool, at the

same time it carries the idea of a kind heart.

Our old man lived on with his sons until finally his hour came to die. He called his three sons and

said to them:world of warcraft gold,

"Dear children of mine, my dying hour is at hand and ye must fulfill my will. Every one of you come

to my grave and spend one night with me; thou, Tom, the first night; thou, Pakhom, the second

night; and thou, Ivanoushka the Simpleton, the third."

Two of the brothers, as clever people, promised their father to do according to his bidding, but

the Simpleton did not even promise; he only scratched his head.

The old man died and was buried. During the celebration the family and guests had plenty of

pancakes to eat and plenty of whisky to wash them down. Break went on to say that.

Now you remember that on the first night Thomas was to go to the grave; but he was too lazy, or

possibly afraid, so he said to the Simpleton:
replica rolex,
"I must be up very early to-morrow morning; I have to thresh; go thou for me to our father's

grave."

"All right," answered Ivanoushka the Simpleton. He took a slice of black rye bread, went to the

grave, stretched himself out, and soon began to snore.

The church clock struck midnight; the wind roared, the owl cried in the trees, the grave opened and

the old man came out and asked:

"Who is there?"

"I,"wedding dress, answered

Ivanoushka.

"Well, my dear son, I will reward thee for thine obedience," said the father.

Lo! the cocks crowed and the old man dropped into the grave. The Simpleton arrived home and went to

the warm stove.

"What happened?" asked the brothers.

"Nothing," he answered. "I slept the whole night and am hungry now."

The second night it was Pakhom's turn to go to his father's grave. He thought it over and said to

the Simpleton:

"To-morrow is a busy day with me. Go in my place to our father's grave."

"All right," answered Ivanoushka. He took along with him a piece of fish pie, went to the grave and

slept. Midnight approached, the wind roared, crows came flying, the grave opened and the old man

came out.replica watches,

"Who is there?" he asked.

"I," answered his son the Simpleton.

"Well, my beloved son, I will not forget thine obedience," said the old man.

The cocks crowed and the old man dropped into his grave. Ivanoushka the Simpleton came home, went

to sleep on the warm stove, and in the morning his brothers asked:

"What happened?"

"Nothing," answered Ivanoushka.

On the third night the brothers said to Ivan the Simpleton:

"It is thy turn to go to the grave of our father. The father's will should be done."

"All right," answered Ivanoushka. He took some cookies, put on his sheepskin, and arrived at the

grave.
